Understand the Price of Data Conversion Before Attempting it on Your Own

The process of data conversion can seem simple enough if you think about in the literal sense, such as converting Meta tag files into HTML code. However, the execution can be tedious and time consuming making it impractical for a small business owner to spend a vast amount of time on a small part of their online business when they have more pressing matters. This is why sometimes it is helpful to hire assistance from properly trained virtual assistants when it comes time for data conversion tasks. With the aid of a trained professional you can free up your schedule to take care of matters that only you have the expertise or authority to complete.

Additionally, there are some types of data conversion that require research and expertise that you may not have. Thus, not only do you have to spend time not only performing the data conversion if you choose to attempt the task yourself, you first have to invest a reasonable amount of time studying how to complete the conversion in the first place. A trained assistant on the other hand is familiar with many tasks since they complete them on a daily basis which is why it may only take them a fraction of the time it would take you to complete the same task.

Finally, the last reason you may want to consider seeking aid with a data conversion is because data that is improperly converted can cost your business. Even if you are not dealing with data related to costs data is the backbone of information and improper information can cause you to make the wrong decision that can impact your profits or future return on your investment. Thus, if you are not comfortable with a data conversion it is always best to spend some money to save more money in the long run before you find out what the implications could be.

Gadgets just keep getting better

The future is here, or at least around the corner. At the recent CeBIT and Consumer Electronics Show trade shows, Taiwanese companies showed off their technology prowess with a slew of concept products. Jason Tan gives a sneak preview of what could become the “next big thing”.

HERE COMES THE BOOKTOP

THE 10.1-inch Gigabyte BookTop M1022 is no ordinary netbook. It doubles up as a nettop – the desktop counterpart of a netbook – with the bundled docking system, which allows the machine to stand upright and be connected to a standalone monitor. There is even an easy keyboard and mouse connectivity for those who don’t fare well with a trackpad.

Road warriors will find it handy to pair the booktop with a big-screen display at home for better visual impact. The grumble? The M1022’s hardware isn’t designed to push large high-definition TVs.

COMPUTER IN A KEYBOARD

ASUSTEK touts the Eee Keyboard PC as the first multimedia centre enabled by Ultra Wide Band wireless connectivity.

It is not only a fully functional PC, but also serves as a hub that wirelessly connects all multimedia devices to use any monitor or TV as a viewing platform.

This space-saving and portable model offers the complete functionality of a desktop PC in a slim and stylish keyboard that weighs under one kilogramme.

A five-inch touch-panel provides users with an interactive and intuitive means for controlling the screen cursor.

A DUAL-PANEL PC

THIS work-in-progress project is Asustek’s answer to feedback from users around the world for its Community Designed PC scheme.

The Dual Panel offers a flexible working space – users can adjust the size of the virtual touchpad and keyboard. It can be turned into a conventional notebook with multi-touch screens, or a multimedia hub where dual panels can combine to form a larger display for widescreen entertainment, or e-book mode where users can hold the dual panel like a conventional book while flipping pages through intuitive gestures or by touch.

SMART MOUSE

THE Navigator T835 Laser from Genius calls for “more functions with less to carry”. It features a presenter, laser mouse and laser beam function.

As a presenter, it can be used for PowerPoint navigation for previous page, next page or play. The laser beam function has a working distance of up to 10 metres and users can even control the mouse cursor in the air.

That’s not all. The device offers eight-way scrolling for Internet pages and document browsing, or just activate turbo scrolling by sliding your finger over the panel to shorten the browsing time.

NO ORDINARY MONITOR

“PLUG it in. Switch it on. Get online!” The product’s tagline says it all.

The BenQ nScreen reflects an integration of the LCD monitor and computer mainframe. So, say goodbye to the setup and wiring hassles that come with a traditional computer.

This innovation comes with an nScreen handset that works just like your home phone – for you to make Internet calls – and a 1.3-megapixel Webcam to bring the faces of your loved ones right before your eyes.

Also, the nScreen keeps you updated with all the latest photos of everyone with its Air Frame software.

How To Buy Cheap Laptops

If you prefer to buy a used notebook rather than a new one, then you should read my guide first. I understand if you need a cheap laptop because we always prefer something which is effective, right? Only game freaks want to buy expensive laptops. If you need a laptop for your job, obviously what you need is a cheap one. Fortunately, you can find cheap laptop easily in used notebooks store.

However, you must also remember that used laptops are not as good as new laptops. Sometimes you can see a damaged power cord inside the used laptop that you want to buy so you should see into the laptop first, whether it has a good power cord or not. After checking the power cord, you must test the keyboard, speakers, and mouse. If one of them is not working, you should find another used laptop.

Another suggestion for you, don't trust the seller. If you ask him/her about the condition of the laptop, he/she will try to convince you that everything is fine. Force the seller to test the laptop in front of you so you will know whether the laptop is completely fine or not. Don't forget to check the monitor and the battery because these two parts are two of the most important components in a notebook.

After you check everything, now you should look inside the hard disk. Find what softwares that the seller has already installed into his/her laptop. If there is no software at all (except the OS), you might want to bargain a little more. You must also compare the price with other used laptops in eBay or other sellers. Good luck.

ICT services vendor sees growth opportunities

By JO TIMBUONG

KUALA LUMPUR: DUTCH information and communications technology (ICT) services and solutions provider Getronics NV sees opportunity for growth for the outsourcing business in Malaysia, especially during the current economic gloom.

Martin Gilday, its vice-president of global service centres, said most companies would likely be considering outsourcing certain business processes as a cost-cutting measure in order to weather the storm.

“We are offering a way to reduce operational costs in the current economic situation,” he said at a press conference after opening the Getronics Global Service Centre (GSC) in Plaza Sentral.

A subsidiary of KPN ICT Services, Getronics provides workspace management, application services, as well as consulting and transformation services.

The GSC will provide KPN’s clients in the Asia-Pacific region with a single point of contact for ICT remote services and support for workspace management.

This means technical experts at Getronics can help the clients with their IT support systems as effectively as onsite support personnel.

Jahangir Naina, managing director of Getronics Asia, said Getronics personnel have more to offer than regular onsite IT support staff.

“Our people are more skilful and are exposed to more technical situations than regular IT support personnel,” he said.

But this doesn’t mean onsite IT personnel are out of a job if their company opts to outsource.

“Such a company will still need onsite support staff to oversee the IT infrastructure within the organisation,” said Jahangir.

Setting up the 11,500sq ft GSC cost Getronics about 1mil euros (RM5mil) and this does not include the company’s investments in skills development and training for the GSC personnel.

The centre has 200 seats now and Getronics hopes to increase that to more than 500 over the next 18 months.

Don’t catch a virus this Valentine’s

By STEFAN NAIDU

Every Valentine’s day since the year 2000, the world has experienced a wave of malicious love-related viruses which spread through the combination of e-mail and infected websites, according to Internet content security company Trend Micro.

The virus has gone by many aliases over the years. Typically, in the few weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, “love” messages flood e-mail inboxes all over the world.

These e-mail messages would contain a link that redirects a user to a website with heart images in the background. When this page is clicked, the user is prompted to download a malicious file, detected by Trend Micro this year as WORM_WALEDEC.AR.

The purpose of the virus is to compromise the security of infected systems by opening random ports to listen for commands from a remote user. This makes the computer extremely vulnerable to infiltration, Trend Micro warned.

To combat this, the company is offering a patch for its customers as well as a free malware scanner and cleaner for anyone wanting to clear the virus off their computers.

For non-Trend Micro customers, the link to the scanner is housecall.trendmicro.com.

Trend Micro customers can download the patch at us.trendmicro.com/us/products/ enterprise/web-protection-add-on.

For more information of the virus itself, other threats and general Internet security issues, visit blog.trendmicro.com.
