How To Buy Cheap Laptops

If you prefer to buy a used notebook rather than a new one, then you should read my guide first. I understand if you need a cheap laptop because we always prefer something which is effective, right? Only game freaks want to buy expensive laptops. If you need a laptop for your job, obviously what you need is a cheap one. Fortunately, you can find cheap laptop easily in used notebooks store.

However, you must also remember that used laptops are not as good as new laptops. Sometimes you can see a damaged power cord inside the used laptop that you want to buy so you should see into the laptop first, whether it has a good power cord or not. After checking the power cord, you must test the keyboard, speakers, and mouse. If one of them is not working, you should find another used laptop.

Another suggestion for you, don't trust the seller. If you ask him/her about the condition of the laptop, he/she will try to convince you that everything is fine. Force the seller to test the laptop in front of you so you will know whether the laptop is completely fine or not. Don't forget to check the monitor and the battery because these two parts are two of the most important components in a notebook.

After you check everything, now you should look inside the hard disk. Find what softwares that the seller has already installed into his/her laptop. If there is no software at all (except the OS), you might want to bargain a little more. You must also compare the price with other used laptops in eBay or other sellers. Good luck.

ICT services vendor sees growth opportunities

By JO TIMBUONG

KUALA LUMPUR: DUTCH information and communications technology (ICT) services and solutions provider Getronics NV sees opportunity for growth for the outsourcing business in Malaysia, especially during the current economic gloom.

Martin Gilday, its vice-president of global service centres, said most companies would likely be considering outsourcing certain business processes as a cost-cutting measure in order to weather the storm.

“We are offering a way to reduce operational costs in the current economic situation,” he said at a press conference after opening the Getronics Global Service Centre (GSC) in Plaza Sentral.

A subsidiary of KPN ICT Services, Getronics provides workspace management, application services, as well as consulting and transformation services.

The GSC will provide KPN’s clients in the Asia-Pacific region with a single point of contact for ICT remote services and support for workspace management.

This means technical experts at Getronics can help the clients with their IT support systems as effectively as onsite support personnel.

Jahangir Naina, managing director of Getronics Asia, said Getronics personnel have more to offer than regular onsite IT support staff.

“Our people are more skilful and are exposed to more technical situations than regular IT support personnel,” he said.

But this doesn’t mean onsite IT personnel are out of a job if their company opts to outsource.

“Such a company will still need onsite support staff to oversee the IT infrastructure within the organisation,” said Jahangir.

Setting up the 11,500sq ft GSC cost Getronics about 1mil euros (RM5mil) and this does not include the company’s investments in skills development and training for the GSC personnel.

The centre has 200 seats now and Getronics hopes to increase that to more than 500 over the next 18 months.

Don’t catch a virus this Valentine’s

By STEFAN NAIDU

Every Valentine’s day since the year 2000, the world has experienced a wave of malicious love-related viruses which spread through the combination of e-mail and infected websites, according to Internet content security company Trend Micro.

The virus has gone by many aliases over the years. Typically, in the few weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, “love” messages flood e-mail inboxes all over the world.

These e-mail messages would contain a link that redirects a user to a website with heart images in the background. When this page is clicked, the user is prompted to download a malicious file, detected by Trend Micro this year as WORM_WALEDEC.AR.

The purpose of the virus is to compromise the security of infected systems by opening random ports to listen for commands from a remote user. This makes the computer extremely vulnerable to infiltration, Trend Micro warned.

To combat this, the company is offering a patch for its customers as well as a free malware scanner and cleaner for anyone wanting to clear the virus off their computers.

For non-Trend Micro customers, the link to the scanner is housecall.trendmicro.com.

Trend Micro customers can download the patch at us.trendmicro.com/us/products/ enterprise/web-protection-add-on.

For more information of the virus itself, other threats and general Internet security issues, visit blog.trendmicro.com.
